What would you give your life for? Pastor Fred Nelson
October 23, 2011
There are moments in our personal lives – and in our congregational lives – that make us stop and examine our identity and our deepest motivations. These are the moments when we stop and ask ourselves about what really matters, about what God is calling us to do and to be, and about what we would give our lives for. These are the watershed moments, the defining moments, the historic moments that we look back on and mark our lives by. Today is one of those moments in the life of our congregation. At our congregational meeting this morning we’ll be taking a vote about whether or not to become a multisite congregation by launching a second site on North Avenue. In our worship this morning we’ll prepare ourselves for that vote by reviewing the nature of the church as we find it in the book of Acts. We’ll look at what the first disciples gave their lives for, and ask ourselves the same question, “What would we give our life for?”

20 BIG Questions: Who are we? Pastor Fred Nelson
September 11, 2011
Over the years we’ve worked our way into “thinking the faith” in a piecemeal way, with a variety of different message series, small group video discussions, and book studies, using the Armchair Theologian series and other resources. All of these are good, useful, and helpful. But one downside to our piecemeal approach is that it can be hard sometimes to connect the theological dots. So, beginning this morning, we’re going to try to help each other connect the dots better in an ambitious 20-week message series we’re calling 20 BIG Questions.
Inspired by the framework of Shirley Guthrie’s book Christian Doctrine (the book we use for our Theological Foundations course), each week we’ll begin to tackle a key theological question. We’ll open up discussion questions that we can use during the week to go deeper and learn from one another. You can think of it as “Theological ABC’s.” Today we’ll begin very contextually, raising up some of the big questions that the events of 9/11 stir up in us.

The Letter to the Hebrews: Faith for the Long Haul Pastor Fred Nelson
December 12, 2010
We’re now in the final week of our four-week message series on the New Testament letter to the Hebrews. More a sermon than a traditional letter, Hebrews is a distinctive, but often neglected voice in the chorus of biblical writers. Carefully following the thought process of the ancient preacher who wrote it can be simultaneously fascinating, confusing, and motivating. And if we have ears to listen carefully, it can still be as a stirring message for burned-out and bored believers today as it was 1900 years ago. Today, as we turn to chapters 11-13, we’re going to need to think about those who preceded us in the faith, and about what faith for the long haul might look like for us.

Today we launch a new four-week message series on the New Testament “letter” to the Hebrews. More a “sermon” than a traditional letter, Hebrews is a distinctive, but often neglected voice in the chorus of biblical writers. Reading it can be simultaneously fascinating, confusing, and motivating. And if we have ears to listen carefully, it can be tremendously rewarding. As we’ll see from today’s look at it’s opening chapters, it’s still a stirring message for burned-out and bored believers.

The "Other" Core Values: Trust and Mutual Accountability Pastor Fred Nelson
October 24, 2010
Last week we began to explore these other qualities of our life together by unpacking the value of “Working in ministry teams as an effective way of discovering and using or God-given gifts.” We learned that, though Christ may call us one by one, he sends us out two by two. Today we’ll focus on two key qualities that we need in order to effectively work alongside one another as we unpack the core value of “creating an atmosphere marked by trust and mutual accountability.”

The "Other" Core Values: Working in Teams Pastor Fred Nelson
October 17, 2010
Today we begin a new four-week message series on our “other” core values. For many years we’ve focused (quite naturally) on the five purposes of the church: Evangelism, Worship, Discipleship, Fellowship, and Service. These five explain the core of who we are and what we do as a church. But there are four other core values that describe how we are as a church. This morning we’ll begin to explore these other qualities of our life together by unpacking the value of “Working in ministry teams as an effective way of discovering and using or God-given gifts.”

September 12, 2010
Today we're launching a new 5-week message series called Sins We (Still) Love . We’re talking about persistent patterns of thought and behavior that we tend to cling to, and then rationalize and make excuses for. The point, of course, isn’t to wallow in our sins, but to confront them and to ask God to forgive, free, and transform us by chiseling away those sins that keep us from following him fully. Today we're opening ourselves up to God chiseling away the pernicious sin of gossip.

Labor Day: Mission Testimonies Pastor Fred Nelson
September 3, 2010
Labor Day weekend is always a great time to stop and reflect on the nature of the work God has given us as a gift and a trust. Where to do we find God present in the work he has called us to? Where is there joy in the midst of hardship, and refreshment in the midst of exhausting labor? This morning we’re going to think about some of these dynamics through the lens of some testimonies from two summer mission trips. We’ll first be hearing from several members of the August mission team to Galveston Island, as they worked in the hot Texas sun to assist in recovery efforts from Hurricane Ike. Pastor Fred will wrap things up with a brief report on his June mission trip to the South American country of Guyana, as he did some coaching and consultation with a declining Lutheran congregation in the capital, Georgetown.

August 1, 2010
Today we begin a new message series we’re calling Jesus Said What?!The turth is, many of us have a well-honed tendency to edit and censor Jesus, by only listening to the stories and teachings that make us feel comfortable. But there’s another, uncensored, often uncomfortable side to the teachings of Jesus. And so, for the next five weeks we’re going to listen, wrestle with, and hopefully open ourselves to his words – trusting that his word will bring us face to face with a truth we need to hear. This morning we’ll be squirming in our seats a bit as we hear Jesus talking about rich people and the Kingdom of God. Aneel Trivedi of our Lay Preaching Team brings today's message.

No Small Plans Pastor Fred Nelson
June 6, 2010 Today’s a special day. It marks the tenth anniversary of inaugurating a bold vision and plan to renew and revitalize Redeemer by calling two pastors to a declining congregation. It also marks the day that we stand on the threshold of adopting an equally bold strategic plan for the next five years. This is a day for taking stock for a life together that is both a gift and a trust – thanking God for all the blessings we’ve received as well as preparing ourselves to confidently share the blessings that God has entrusted us with. The quote on the cover, “Make no small plans, they have no power to stir men’s souls.” comes from Chicago architect Daniel Burnham. Today we might want to do Burnham one better, by reminding ourselves of this powerful truth from God’s Word: “I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.” 2Timothy 1:7

April 25, 2010
Our Discipleship Coordinator Mike Willis helps us explore the "Who" question of evangelism. Who is God calling us to reach out to? Who may be receptive to our faith story to the Good News? The answer, it seems, are the people that already know that we care about them and the people who don't yet know that we care about them. Mike shares two stories that make that core truth come alive.

What can we prepare to say when people ask us about the hope that lives inside of us? Remarkably, our answer to that "what-question" just might make some history!

Palm Sunday: Upside-Down King Pastor Fred Nelson
April 5, 2009
Let’s come right out and admit it…we Christians are strange people. There’s just no denying it. And we’re strange for a reason. We’re strange because we’ve let our world be turned upside down by Jesus, who himself led an upside-down life. We find ourselves, like the ancient crowds lining the roads to Jerusalem, honoring and praising a “king” who looks like anything but. Today is Palm/Passion Sunday – itself a strange and upside-down kind of worship experience where we rejoice over a weeping prophet and worship a king who rides a donkey. Welcome to the upside-down world of our King!

It’s Latin for a deformity of the soul and the self. It means we’re spiritually curved in on ourselves. It means we’re crooked. Warped, Twisted. Corkscrewed. Self-centered. Self-absorbed. There are defining moments for each of us. And there are defining moments for communities. Moments to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask, "Who am I? Who are we?" They’re put-up-or-shut-up moments. Either/Or moments. What’s-it-gonna-be moments. The earliest Christians faced these moments and so do we whenever we stop and ask ourselves, "Are we set right with God by what we do or by what Christ has done?"
