    October 23, 2011

There are moments in our personal lives – and in our congregational lives – that make us stop and examine our identity and our deepest motivations. These are the moments when we stop and ask ourselves about what really matters, about what God is calling us to do and to be, and about what we would give our lives for. These are the watershed moments, the defining moments, the historic moments that we look back on and mark our lives by. Today is one of those moments in the life of our congregation. At our congregational meeting this morning we’ll be taking a vote about whether or not to become a multisite congregation by launching a second site on North Avenue. In our worship this morning we’ll prepare ourselves for that vote by reviewing the nature of the church as we find it in the book of Acts. We’ll look at what the first disciples gave their lives for, and ask ourselves the same question, “What would we give our life for?”

    September 11, 2011
Over the years we’ve worked our way into “thinking the faith” in a piecemeal way, with a variety of different message series, small group video discussions, and book studies, using the Armchair Theologian series and other resources. All of these are good, useful, and helpful. But one downside to our piecemeal approach is that it can be hard sometimes to connect the theological dots. So, beginning this morning, we’re going to try to help each other connect the dots better in an ambitious 20-week message series we’re calling 20 BIG Questions.

Inspired by the framework of Shirley Guthrie’s book Christian Doctrine (the book we use for our Theological Foundations course), each week we’ll begin to tackle a key theological question. We’ll open up discussion questions that we can use during the week to go deeper and learn from one another. You can think of it as “Theological ABC’s.” Today we’ll begin very contextually, raising up some of the big questions that the events of 9/11 stir up in us.

    March 6, 2011

Today we begin a new 7-week message series to launch our all-congregation book, Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope That Matters. This morning we’ll begin by reminding ourselves of a teaching of Jesus that points to the very heart of life itself – loving God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves. We’ll then begin the process of identifying our idols – those counterfeit gods that our hearts manufacture – in order to confront and remove them so that we can live the life of love that Jesus calls us to.

A little over a year ago, in the middle of a worship service, we gave two fifty dollar bills to each kid in our youth group .We entrusted our youth with two “talents,” (two fifty-dollar bills) and we challenged them to be productive “two-talent Christians,” glorifying God and helping others. Today we check back in with them to see how it actually went. We’ll hear their stories of being two-talent Christians in their own words.

We'll look at four fictional guys and the barriers they face when it comes to the church. December 12, 2010
We’re now in the final week of our four-week message series on the New Testament letter to the Hebrews. More a sermon than a traditional letter, Hebrews is a distinctive, but often neglected voice in the chorus of biblical writers. Carefully following the thought process of the ancient preacher who wrote it can be simultaneously fascinating, confusing, and motivating. And if we have ears to listen carefully, it can still be as a stirring message for burned-out and bored believers today as it was 1900 years ago. Today, as we turn to chapters 11-13, we’re going to need to think about those who preceded us in the faith, and about what faith for the long haul might look like for us.

Labor Day weekend is always a great time to stop and reflect on the nature of the work God has given us as a gift and a trust. Where to do we find God present in the work he has called us to? Where is there joy in the midst of hardship, and refreshment in the midst of exhausting labor? This morning we’re going to think about some of these dynamics through the lens of some testimonies from two summer mission trips. We’ll first be hearing from several members of the August mission team to Galveston Island, as they worked in the hot Texas sun to assist in recovery efforts from Hurricane Ike. Pastor Fred will wrap things up with a brief report on his June mission trip to the South American country of Guyana, as he did some coaching and consultation with a declining Lutheran congregation in the capital, Georgetown.

    Pastor Fred Nelson

    June 6, 2010
Today’s a special day. It marks the tenth anniversary of inaugurating a bold vision and plan to renew and revitalize Redeemer by calling two pastors to a declining congregation. It also marks the day that we stand on the threshold of adopting an equally bold strategic plan for the next five years. This is a day for taking stock for a life together that is both a gift and a trust – thanking God for all the blessings we’ve received as well as preparing ourselves to confidently share the blessings that God has entrusted us with. The quote on the cover, “Make no small plans, they have no power to stir men’s souls.” comes from Chicago architect Daniel Burnham. Today we might want to do Burnham one better, by reminding ourselves of this powerful truth from God’s Word: “I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.” 2Timothy 1:7

    Pastor Fred Nelson

    February 28, 2010
Jesus says, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." So, how's that going for you? In your personal experience, has it been harder for you to learn to love others or to love yourself properly? What if you and I are only ever gonna learn Jesus' language of love by learning to love "as" he does?

We're created in God's image - built to love, designed to love. We're made to be filled with the overflow of the inner-flow of God's love. And yet, something's going wrong. The love keeps leaking out of us. We'll talk about plugging those leaky parts of ourselves, and living the life of love that we're made for.

This morning we’ll zero in on a couple of Bible passages that point to the very heart of life itself. With everything that swirls around us, what’s the core, the center, the prime directive for human life? Moses had a good idea of what the Main Thing was. And so did Jesus.

    January 17, 2010

Today we’ll be exploring a picture, a parable, and a project that show the intimate connection between gift and responsibility. We’re both God’s children who receive spiritual gifts as well as God’s servants who have sacred trusts. It’s a big deal when God comes to us with the keys to his creation and says, “Okay, it’s your turn.”

    January 10, 2010

Today we’ll look at making a connection between our individual giftedness and our communal calling by seeing how our gifts can fit in and be coordinated with the gifts of others to accomplish God’s mighty and marvelous mission of reaching the lost and bringing them home. We do that by using a memorable movie clip from Apollo 13 as a modern parable of God’s gifts and God’s mission.

The problem is: many of are aren’t sure that we have much of worth to offer God.  We’re not sure what gifts we have or where to put them to use.  So, for the next three weeks we’ll be exploring what it is to be “Gifted By God”.  Today, after rejecting four popular myths about gifts, we begin the process of discovering our gifts – especially the gifts of our personality and passion.

Continuing our preparation for our Faith in Action Sunday, we’ll shift metaphors and see explore how the “lens” we look through can distort or block us from seeing the reality that God is trying to reveal to us. Vision is a funny thing: sometimes we’re aware that something’s wrong, and other times we need to take a test to realize what we’re missing. So get ready for a little “vision test” today!

What do you think about the idea that your following of Jesus miht not look like someone else's? How do we reconcile concern for our neighbor with Jesus' command to Peter to simply follow?

    Pastor Fred Nelson

    April 5, 2009
Let’s come right out and admit it…we Christians are strange people. There’s just no denying it. And we’re strange for a reason. We’re strange because we’ve let our world be turned upside down by Jesus, who himself led an upside-down life. We find ourselves, like the ancient crowds lining the roads to Jerusalem, honoring and praising a “king” who looks like anything but. Today is Palm/Passion Sunday – itself a strange and upside-down kind of worship experience where we rejoice over a weeping prophet and worship a king who rides a donkey. Welcome to the upside-down world of our King!

    March 15, 2009
There's a paradox here. We’re called by Jesus to be intensely aware of where we need to grow and intentionally working on it. And, at the same time, we’re to be strategically un-self-aware. Jesus is calling us to be simultaneously fully engaged and self-forgetful - focused and obedient and forgetting ourselves on purpose. But…how do you do that? How do we forget ourselves on purpose?

We launch into our 6-week message series on narciissism, using David Zimmerman's book, "Deliver Us From Me-Ville." We begin with the diagnosis: “We've got…incurvatus in se.” Huh? It’s Latin for a deformity of the soul and the self. It means we’re spiritually curved in on ourselves. It means we’re crooked. Warped, Twisted. Corkscrewed. Self-centered. Self-absorbed. Self-preoccupied. And this deformity plays out as either pride or sloth.

    February 1, 2009
There are defining moments for each of us. And there are defining moments for communities. Moments to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask, "Who am I? Who are we?" They’re put-up-or-shut-up moments. Either/Or moments. What’s-it-gonna-be moments. The earliest Christians faced these moments and so do we whenever we stop and ask ourselves, "Are we set right with God by what we do or by what Christ has done?"

    January 25, 2009
We’ve been exploring how we might find a greater measure of true contentment by reordering our priorities and by intentionally stopping in the midst of our over-stuffed and hectic lives. This morning we’re going to take it a step further by stepping back to ask once again about the meaning of our lives. What’s it all about, anyway? How are we supposed to play this game called life? And how do we measure how we’re doing?

The biblical story discloses the God who exists as a community of persons. When we talk about relationship, we’re at the very heart of the matter, the very heart of God’s own self and our selves.
